Le Monde
Five years building the frontend of one of France's largest editorial platforms. No JS or CSS frameworks — just well-structured HTML and CSS on a PHP stack serving millions of readers daily.
What I worked on
Core site architecture, navigation systems, article templates, newsletter templates and subscriber journeys — across Le Monde, Le Nouvel Obs and Télérama. Built inside a backend-heavy squad with a strong preference for explicit, maintainable frontend systems over abstraction.
Technical approach
No JavaScript frameworks, no CSS libraries. BEM and atomic CSS on a PHP/Phalcon stack compiled with Webpack. Every component hand-written — which meant every component was debuggable, measurable and replaceable.
Scope
- Site structure and page architecture
- Mega-menu and navigation systems
- Article templates at editorial scale
- Newsletter templates
- Subscriber journeys and paywall flows
What made it interesting
Shipping maintainable frontend structure under editorial, subscription and performance constraints at scale. Not just templates — a system that hundreds of articles could flow through without breaking.
